California Wild Rose
Rosa californica

This  fragrant shrub reaches 3-6 feet in height and has pink to white flowers.  It is found on slopes and next to streams of chaparral and woodland communities of  California and southern Oregon.  This wild rose grows upright and forms large thickets.  Flowers bloom from may to October.  The fruits are bright red when ripe.

Native American Usage

The Native Americans use an infusion of the blossoms for infant pain.  A decoction of fruit "hips" was used for various ailments including rheumatism, colds, as a wash for scabs and sores, fevers, indigestion, kidney ailments and sore throats.  Blossoms were soaked in water to make a beverage.  Fruits were eaten fresh.
