Hollyleaf Redberry
Rhamnus ilicifolia

The hollyleaf redberry is also known as hollyleaved coffeeberry. This member of the buckthorn family grows to 12 feet with many angular, spiny branches.  The leaves are about 1", nearly round, toothed, leathery and evergreen.  The tiny yellowish flowers bloom in clusters from January to April.  The tiny, berry-like fruit is bright red colored by mid-summer.

This shrub is found in throughout California below 6,500 feet, including desert mountains.

Native American Usage

The Native Americans would dry and grind the seeds into a meal or porridge.
