Raccoon
Procyon lotor
 

 

Description: Gray with black face mask and ringed tail (usually 5 rings).  Weighs up to 35 lbs. 

Range:  Southern Canada to Central America.  Introduced into Europe and Asia.

Habitat: Woods, swamps.  Lives in trees, feeds along water’s edge. 

Diet:  Eggs, reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, mollusks, vegetables, fruit. 

Reproduction:  Gestation 63 days.  Litter of 1-7 weigh 2 oz at birth. 

Life Span:  12+ years in captivity. 

Habits:  Nocturnal.  The “washing” of food in the wild is not to rinse food items, but a search for aquatic food. 

General Information:    Non-retractile claws. Name comes from Algonquin Indian name Aroughcoune,  which means “he scratches with his hands”.
