California Quail
Lophortyx californicus

 

Description:  9 - 11 inches. Plump.  Brown and gray with a forward curving black plume on head.  Chestnut crown, forehead white, grayish-blue breast.  Female is duller in coloration. 

Range:  California, south to Baja California.  Introducted to southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  Also found in southern Oregon and northern Nevada. 

Habitat:  Coastal brush,  timberland edges and open chaparral, also adjacent deserts. 

Vocalizations:   ka ka kow (second note is highest).  Calls include a series of loud pit notes. 

Nest:  10-17 buffy, spotted eggs.  Nest is a grassy depression on ground.  Chicks can fly when ten days old. 

General Information:  State bird of California.
