California Poppy
Eschsholtzia californica

The California Poppy is recognized by its fernlike leaves and orange flowers, which bloom February to September. This state flower of California is found in open areas and on grassy slopes from California to Washington. The flowers close at night and on cloudy days. The spicy fragrance attracts beetles, which serve as pollinators.

Native American Usage

The leaves were used for toothache and a mild sedative for babies. Women used the pollen from flowers as a facial cosmetic. The flowers and leaves were eaten.
