Collared Peccary
Tayassu tajacu

 

Description:  Also known as the Javelina.  Two feet tall and three feet long, 40-50 pounds, upper tusks point down, 38 teeth, three toes on each hind foot.  Has a large scent gland on spine near tail. 

Range: Southwestern United States to northern Argentina. 

Habitat:  Low and high dry tropical forest, wet tropical forest, chaparral and oak grassland. 

Diet:  Omnivore.  Eats fruit, roots, tubers, carrion.  Feeds heavily on prickly pear cactus. 

Reproduction:  Two to six young are born after a four month gestation.   

General Information:  Lifespan is 15-20 years.  Active mainly during the day.  Travels in herds of 6-30 individuals.  Can gallop up to 25 m.p.h.  Will swim if necessary.
