Ocelot
Leopardus pardalis

 

This solitary cat in endangered in the United States with as few as 120 living in Texas and an unknown number in Arizona. They are also found in Mexico, CenPhotograph by Dave Rectortral America, and South America from Argentina to Equador. They live in humid jungles, dense forests, brush and chaparral.

These nocturnal, spotted cats have large eyes and good night vision. They diet ranges from birds, rabbits and rodents, to reptiles fish, frogs, and monkeys.

They have been hunted and prized for their fur since the ancient Aztecs. In the 1960’s to mid-1970’s, as many as 200,000 ocelot were killed annual for their fur.
