Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus

 

Description: 18”-25”.  Large owl with ear tufts, yellow eyes, white throat, barred underside.

Range:  Common in all of North America up to the northern tree limit.

Habitat: All habitats, including deserts. 

Diet: Rabbits, rodents and birds including crows and ducks.

Nest: Nest in abondoned hawk nest or on a ledge.  Lays 2-3 eggs.

General Information:  Nocturnal predator.  Wings make little noise during flight.  Like most birds of prey, owls ingest bone and fur, but are not capable of digesting it.  This residual material is formed into a pellet in the stomach and regurgitated.
