Foothill Pine
Pinus sabiniana

Also known as digger pine, bull pine, or gray pine.  The soft lightweight wood is not durable and the crooked, forking trunks make the wood impractical to use.  It reaches 40-70 feet tall and is found on dry slopes, foothills and low mountains of northern to southern California.

Native American Usage

The Native Americans used the resin from the sap to chew for rheumatism and was applied to burns and sores.  Burning leaves and twigs were used as sweat baths for rheumatism pains and bruises.  Pine seeds were eaten fresh, roasted, boiled, ounded or mixed with cold water.
