Encelia californica

This member of the sunflower family in found along the coast of southern California.  This plant is also known as the coast sunflower and bush daisy. The flowers are 1-2 inches in diameter with yellow petals and a black center.  They bloom from March to June.

Native American Usage

The blossoms and leaves were made into a tea for toothache. The heated sap was applied to the chest for pain.  The stems exude a fragrant resin that was often chewed.
