White-nosed Coati

Nasua narica

  
Description:
 Head and body length is 20-25.  Tail is 20-25”.        Weight is 15-25 pounds.  The long snout aids in rooting out grubs and tubers.  White spots are above and below each eye.  Coatis have a ringed tail. 

Range: Arizona, Mexico, and Central and South America. 

Habitat:  Arid country and open forests. 

Vocalizations:  Loud grunt when alarmed.  Squeaks. 

Diet:  Vertebrates, small invertebrates, fruit. 

Habits:  Dirunal (active during the day).  Females forage in large groups.  Males are generally solitary. 

General Information:  Related to the raccoon.  The females and their young associate in bands of 5-12 animals.  The  solitary males are often called coatimundi, which means “lone coati” in German.
