Chaparral Mallow
Malacothamnus fasciculatus

Also known as bush mallow, this large, open shrub may reach 15 feet.  The five-petaled pinkish lavender flowers bloom from April to September.  This mallow can be found on chaparral slopes, coastal sage scrub habitats, and dry alluvial fans below 2,500 feet on inland California and coastal ranges from Mendocino County south.

Other members of the mallow family include hibiscus, hollyhock and cotton.
