Bald Eagle
Description:
Brown bird with white head and tail. Wingspan of 7 1/2 feet. Beak and legs are yellow. When immature,
it is dark brown with mottled white. It will gradually assume full white
plumage in the fourth year. Females weigh 10-14 pounds, males weigh 8-9 pounds. Habitat: Near water - rivers, lakes, oceans. Diet: Eats fish, carrion and small mammals. rarely eats birds. Feeds chiefly on dead or dying fish and will steal fish from osprey. Nest: 1-3 white eggs are laid in a large stick nest in a tall tree. Nest is called an aerie. General Information: Immature bald eagle looks similar to a golden eagle. (Golden eagles have feathered legs, while bald eagles do not have feathers on the lower leg.) Flight speed is up to 44 mph.
